TARGET POPULATION: Third graders at ParkView Elementary School
(approximately 60-100 students)
PURPOSE: To increase the reading/English SOL scores of
third graders at ParkView
Elementary School to meet the federal and state guidelines
for standards
of learning.
OBJECTIVES:
• Third graders at ParkView Elementary School will achieve
a 75 or higher score
on their reading/English SOL test for the 2005-06 academic
year.
PROGRAM STRATEGY:
• Portsmouth Link Program Coordinator (Ray) and Services
to Youth Facet Chair
(Watkins) will meet with principal at ParkView Elementary
School to explain
program and get commitment for program participation (sign
Commitment
Contract).
• Portsmouth Link Program Coordinator and Services to
Youth Facet Chair will
meet with third grade teachers at ParkView Elementary School
to explain
program and get a commitment for program participation (sign
Commitment
Contract).
• PTA dinner meetings will be held at the school to
discuss the program with
parents and get a commitment for program participation (sign
Commitment
Contract).
• Students will read one book each month from an approved
pre-selected reading
list from the Portsmouth Public Schools System commencing
December 2005.
• Teachers will have a monthly 'Book Talk" (specific
activity such as discussing
certain chapters in the book, etc) for fifteen minutes perhaps
on Friday.
• Portsmouth Chapter-Links (members) will develop Student
Packets for each
book (if pre-packaged activities are not received with the
books). The student
packets will include after school activities relative to the
book that the parents will
discuss with and assist the child. Parents will be required
to complete and sign a
Monthly Form indicating that the child is on target with his/her
reading
assignments and activities. Forms will be signed at the end
of each month after
the reading is completed and submitted to the Portsmouth Chapter
Link contact
.
• Portsmouth Chapter-Links will develop a Parent Packet
that will be distributed
to all parents involved in the project. The packet will contain
a Commitment
Contract, Documented Reading Form and Book Discussion Tips/Strategies.
