The Links, Incorporated is
an organization of women with 270 chapters located throughout
the United States, the District of Columbia, Nassau, Bahamas,
and Frankfurt, Germany. It was founded by the late Mrs. Sarah
S. Scott and the late Mrs. Margaret R. Hawkins in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania on Novemeber 9, 1946. The organization has been
incorporated since March 28, 1951.
Born in the immediate aftermath of World
War II and facing new concerns and mid-century imperatives
in human rights, social and racial justice, the organization
was of necessity compelled to respond to its national environment
and to its high sense of purpose. For 54 years, The Links,
Incorporated has gathered momentum, continuously redefining
its purposes, sharpening its focus, and expanding program
dimensions in order to make the name "Links" not
only a chain of friendship, but also a chain of purpose.
The Portsmouth Chapter, The Links, Incorporated
feels particularly proud of its involvement in the activities
of this community. Organized by Hazel Wells Reid and chartered
December 30, 1950, its program facets parallel those on the
national level. With the continued support of this community,
every effort will be made to improve the quality of life of
minority citizens and others who may need it.
